Part Two: This Lazy Girl's Guide to Wine, The Series
Hey there fellow Wine Lovers! My apologies for the radio silence. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, along with the earthquake in Mexico had me in a bit of a tizzy. I'm a worrier by nature, so when I first started hearing about the impending bad weather I was concerned, but this recent bout of bad weather was different. I have family in Florida, my brother and sister-in-law were on a cruise to Mexico and have been stuck at sea for 4 days. Needless to say, life has been nothing but constant weather related updates and forecasts for a while now.
Nothing can throw a girl off her game quicker than a natural disaster can.
So while I continue to do my part for the relief efforts, I want to take a moment to lighten the mood a bit and talk about Wine. Red Wine to be exact.
What exactly is Red Wine? Good question... Red Wine is wine made from an array of dark-colored grapes. Reds vary not only in flavor but also in color. There are the beautiful lush violet hues for younger wines, the deep brick shades for mature wines, and finally the rich brown tones for older more vintage wines. Red wine is alluring in all its forms (except of course when spilled on a favorite white blouse while out at dinner.)
Of all the wines, Reds are most often associated with romance. If types of wine were a group of girlfriends, Red would be the Sexy One of the group. Red wines are often viewed as mysterious, sophisticated and a little dangerous. Just think about Pinot Noir, the name alone evokes images of classic movie Femme Fatales with long finger nails downing glasses of dark red wine out of long stemmed wine glasses.
Speaking of wine glasses, let's talk about how red wine is best enjoyed. Don't get me wrong, a good wine can be enjoyed out of anything from a jelly jar to a soup bowl, but because we are visual creatures who enjoy things with our eyes as well as our taste buds, a good wine glass can only heighten the experience.
Red wines tend to be bold in flavor, so the bowl of a Red wine glass is larger than that of a White wine glass. All that aroma and flavor from Reds need room to emerge and mingle. Similar to a tall person needing more leg room on a car ride than a smaller person. So I guess you can say Reds have longer legs than their white and blush counterparts.
The first picture is of two types of Red wine glasses. Of course, my favorite is the glass on the left. The large round shape of the bowl is just so dramatic and evokes feelings of class rather than wineo. The second picture is of a white wine glass, notice the bowl shape is more pointed at the bottom. Finally, the third picture is of all three glasses hanging out, just like girlfriends do.
Reds pair well with everything from red meat, to pasta to chocolate. Say it with me ..... Cho co late! Sounds delicious doesn't it?
Now that we know what glass to drink our Red wine out of, next week we'll learn a little more about what to drink our Reds with.
